Strengthening Structured Training & Skills Management

On November 19th, we had the pleasure of participating in Champ’s annual networking event, where industry leaders gathered to share insights and best practices on structured job training and operational competency management. The event featured engaging presentations from LEGO, Convatec, Ball, and us from Business Through People, all revolving around three key themes:

    1. The Need for Skills Management to Be Anchored in Factory Leadership – Ensuring strategic alignment and clear prioritization.
    2. The Role of TWI-JI in Supporting Training Management – Understanding how Training Within Industry – Job Instruction (TWI-JI) integrates with Champ’s job training and competency management approach.
    3. The Importance of Structured Training Follow-Up Based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – Ensuring training outcomes align with business goals.

Our Contribution: Bridging the Gap with TWI Job instruction

At Business Through People (BTP), we were honored to contribute to the event by presenting on “An Introduction to TWI and How to Apply It in Practice.” Together with my colleague Thomas Ilskov, Senior Master Enabler at BTP, we provided a foundational introduction to TWI, emphasizing its interconnected elements and why it is often referred to as ‘the human side of Lean.

We then took a deeper dive into TWI Job Instruction (JI), discussing the critical aspects of selecting the right Job Trainer (Mentor) and how structured follow-ups can maximize training effectiveness. The engagement and discussions during our session underscored the relevance of TWI in today’s manufacturing environments, where standardized work and skills development are essential for operational excellence.
