What is TWI Job Methods

The thinking behind

The underlying philosophy of Job Relations

Job Methods is rooted in the principle of continuous improvement through practical and immediate action. By engaging the people who know the work best and following the 4-step method, it empowers teams to analyze processes, eliminate unnecessary steps, and make work safer, easier, and more efficient. The philosophy centers on maximizing existing resources and generating ideas that lead to tangible improvements without significant investment, fostering a culture of ongoing progress and innovation.

Job Methods: Driving Immediate Improvements

Job Methods focuses on “How can we quickly improve today with what we have?” This kind of improvement does not call for significant investments or long-term considerations. Job Methods enhance our ability to look at the work, understand all the details, and generate new ideas. It helps us determine what we can eliminate from the existing process here and now.

Streamlining Work for Better Results

Job Methods deliver a good, solid methodology to reduce unnecessary details that all jobs contain. The intention is to improve and get more throughput without stressing or constraining people doing the work. The aim is to make the work safer, easier and more reliable.

Engaging the Workforce for Continuous Improvement

There is a high degree of people involvement in Job Methods. The more involvement of people doing the work, the better. They know the process and by following the 4-step method they will quickly generate new ideas. Job Methods build the skill of how to continuously improve the work.

Key Principles for Successful Job Methods

What are the elements of Job Methods

In TWI Job Methods, key elements guide supervisors in improving work processes effectively. Each element is designed to provide practical support and a structured approach, helping supervisors analyze tasks, eliminate waste, and implement improvements that enhance efficiency and safety.

Select the critical jobs

The first step in TWI Job Methods is identifying critical jobs that require improvements. These tasks significantly impact safety, quality, cost, or productivity. By focusing on critical jobs, supervisors ensure that resources are used efficiently, and improvements are made to enable people to work safely, efficiently, and smarter with less effort.

Job Methods breakdown sheet

The Job Methods Breakdown Sheet is a key tool in TWI Job Methods, breaking down tasks to understand the content, see potential, and organize the improvement in your mind.
it consists of three essential elements:

  1. Details of method – a detailed capturing of “everything the person does”.
  2. Observations – Everything that enhances effort, breaks flow, obstacles in the layout, and affects quality.
  3. Question every detail – capture new ideas in an organized manner. Ready to decide and organize the new and improved work process

This structured approach ensures clarity and consistency, making it easier for employees to see the potential and communicate the improvement made

Understand the details of the job

Everything starts with the ability to capture all the details and understand the current method. We practice observing and understanding what happens and how it affects safety and performance. What kind of physical or mental effort is there? How does the workplace and product design impact the flow?

Question everything and develop a new method

IImproving is based on our ability to generate new ideas and look at the work from new perspectives. In Job Methods training, we practice a questioning pattern that sparks idea generation. The Ideas then lead to a decision process to develop the new method. Not all ideas are good ideas.

Apply the new method

Many improvements “die in the drawer” due to slow internal approval processes and bureaucracy. Quick approval is based on how early we secure support from people doing the work and relevant stakeholders responsible for safety, quality, production and cost.

Improvement culture

Job Methods introduces a dialog that quickly enhances the Job Methods practitioner into the coaching role of talking improvements with people doing the work, this transitioning into daily improvement dialogs enhances the continuous improvement culture in the business.

How is TWI Job Methods Taught?

The TWI Job Methods (JM) program offers structured training levels tailored to small groups, ensuring close interaction and personalized coaching from the trainer. This approach fosters knowledge sharing, hands-on practice, and the creation of a collaborative and psychologically safe learning environment.

Each participant is required to apply the TWI JM method to improve a real work process during the class, providing immediate, practical experience and encouraging early adoption of the technique. Practical exercises and guided discussions enable participants to build confidence in analyzing tasks, identifying improvements, and implementing changes effectively.

True to the hands-on nature of the TWI program, no PowerPoint presentations are used in the training. Instead, participants engage in active discussions and practical applications, a style that consistently receives excellent feedback for its clarity, relevance, and impact.

The training materials are kept up-to-date and in plain, everyday language, avoiding academic jargon to ensure accessibility and understanding for all participants.
